Mercury WDV Project

The Mercury Women's Demonstration Vehicle (WDV) was a study to identify and develop features that excite and delight female customers with features that would enhance their daily driving experience and quality of life. For example: note the dual power bulges on the hood, they are there to assist drivers to see where the hood ends.Mechanically adjustable pedal boards have improved the ergonomics and safety of drivers under the 50th percentile as well as improving the airbag to torso relationship.

The WDV was built on a running Ford Contour (CW27)) platform in order to more easily facilitate focus groups. Many of the exercises, like the indirect lighting adjustable pedal were put into production on many Ford family products.

The WDV was chock full of innovations both inside and out, the team identified outdoor lighting strategies that would improve the safety of a single female driver with the assistance of convenience lighting when the FOB is depressed or upon exit of the vehicle. The rear turn signal lamps are to improve lane changing maneuvers. The offset deck height helps shorter drivers with rear downward vision.
